Marble is a durable stone widely used for sculptures due to its natural beauty, but can easily break if a handling accident occurs.
In this case, One of the wings of the sculpture "Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss" by Antonio Canova was broken in transport. The examination revealed that there were old repairs and a wide over-paint that concealed the beauty of the stone. The over-paint was removed, the old repairs realigned and the recently broken pieces reattached.
Before reattaching the broken marble pieces together, all parts were cleaned along the edges, loose particles removed and the surfaces were degreased with an appropriate solvent. All the pieces were joined with a stone adhesive. Missing marble chips were filled with the same resin used to attach the pieces mixed with glass microballoons and a pigment to match the color of the marble surface.
