Transcending Boundaries: Chinese Women Painters from Dynastic Times to the Modern Era

FEBRUARY 26 – MAY 29, 2022 @ NORTON MUSEUM OF ART

The third in a series of examining works of art created by the women of China, this installation of four paintings on view in the Niblack Gallery explores relationships evidenced in these works between Guan Daosheng (1262-1319) and Ru Wenshu (1573-1633),as well as Zhou Lianxia(1909 –2000) and Lu Xiaoman(1903-1965).The title for this installation was inspired by an inscription on a painting attributed to Guan Daosheng:

"To play with brush and ink is masculine sort of thing to do, yet I made this painting. Wouldn't some say that I have transgressed? How despicable; how despicable."
